SD Prairie Lion

February 6, 2017 | By: Nick Haivala

I shot this cat at about 3:00 p.m. on Friday, February 3rd east of Tilford in Meade County.

I got a call from a friend who has some dogs. He said he found some tracks and asked if I wanted to go shoot a lion. I told him yes and met up with him.

The dogs were on the tracks for about an hour and had it treed. We walked up to and sure enough it was there in the tree. I was a little nervous that we were going to walk up on a bobcat and not a lion but once we got there and I saw it I was a little relieved. We sat there and took some nice pictures of him up in the tree. Then we tied the dogs up and I took the shot with my .223.

It was a good shot and he wasn't going far but the dogs got loose and started to tangle up with him on the ground. One of the guys with us was ran over and shot him twice with his .45 pistol before it started to harm the dogs.

We took him in to get checked in the next day and got him weighed. He was 144lb male, 4-5 years old. It was a lot of fun, one of the most exciting hunts I've ever been on.

*Because this lion was shot outside the Black Hills Fire Protection District, it does not count against the season limit.

Check out all the lions taken in the 2017 season.
